You're invited! It's the dinner party of one of your closest friends and all your other close friends and family will be there. Decide right now, will you go?
We hesitate. We wonder if something better will come up (FOBO - Fear of a better Offer) or we think we'll miss out on something else (FOMO - Fear of Missing Out). So we respond "maybe."
This is exactly what the friends of the king do in the parable from the Gospel Luke (14:15-24). The King says the banquet is now ready and sends a servant to invite his guests. One declines because he has just bought a field, another because he bought oxen, and the third because he just married a woman.
Are we declining God's invitation too? Are we responding "maybe" and if nothing better comes up, we'll try to go? Do we realize what is said of those who decline in the parable? "For, I tell you, none of those men who were invited will taste my dinner." (Luke 14:24)
Eternal life is the best invitation and we don't want to miss out on it! Lord, help us to realize this! Help us to see that our "new field" and "new oxen" are not worth our attention in light of your eternal love. Help us to send in our RSVP to you today, now, and say "Yes."
Mother Mary echoes this lesson in her life, as she goes in "haste" to visit her cousin Elizabeth after the Annunciation. Our Lady does not hesitate! She does not delay. She says "Yes" right away to God to His Will.
We cannot be afraid to say "Yes" to God! Let's get rid of the "Maybe's" and let us live what Jesus taught us, "Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Anything more is from the evil one. " (Matthew 5:37)
Mother Mary, pray for us!
